Frozen Iphone Fix ( How To)

Etichete:

Occasionally your Apple iPhone may hang or 'freeze' during an operation. We show you how to unfreeze an unresponsive iPhone without doing a full Restore in iTunes

Occasionally your iPhone may freeze or hang during an operation - old timers would call it a crash - and won't respond to the home buttons, sleep button or the touchscreen.

If this happens there are two solutions you should try first:

  • Option 1: press and hold down the Home button on the front of the iPhone for at least 6 seconds. In most cases this should shut down the unresponsive application and return you to the main menu
  • Option 2: if option 1 didn't work then you will need to reset the iPhone. You can do this by pressing the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button on the top the iPhone's case and holding them down together for 10 seconds. The iPhone should then reset itself and return to the locked state

If neither of these two options fixes your unresponsive iPhone then you should connect it to your Mac or PC and launch iTunes. Click on the Summary tab and then click on the Restore button.

This will restore your iPhone to its factory settings and install the latest version of the iPhone operating software. It will also erase all the songs, videos, calendar and contact information on the iPhone. (Though it is easy enough to reinstall that info by syncing with iTunes when the iPhone is fixed).

If none of the above methods fixes your iPhone you will need to call the retailer who supplied it to you.

Qik, Stream Video from your phone

Etichete:

Just when you think that your cell phone is able to do everything, along comes Qik. Qik enables your handset to perform a direct video streaming, so I would highly recommend some sort of unlimited data plan if you happen to be interested, unless you're filthy rich and don't mind paying a fortune based on cents-per-kilobyte.

Of course, it helps if the people viewing your live antics have a decent Internet connection as well. Check out this page for the list of supported handsets (iPhone included although it isn't mentioned there).

Now follow next steps and you will be ready to play new games on your Nokia(at this moment n-gage application is available for N81, N81 8 GB, N95, N95 8GB and N82). In the main menu, highlight Tools. Press select

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 hands-on, sorta

Etichete:

So here's the scene. We're at the Digital Experience show, trying to get our hands on a powered-up Sony Xperia X1. Sure, we found a unit that wasn't powered up, but that does you -- and us -- no good. Sony told us to come back in 15 minutes, so we grabbed some press kits, made a round of booths, and came back.

Sure enough, when we came back the X1 was powered up, but the nice booth lady tried to tell us that things weren't working just right and the unit was stuck on the config screen. After some jiggering, we determined the little X1 was just stuck on the touch screen calibration, and we were cruising through menus within minutes. It's pretty clear this unit wasn't ready for primetime -- you'll even see some HTC test apps in the below gallery -- but we were impressed by the screen's resolution and brightness. Windows Mobile 6.1 showed it face often in the UI, but the phone app and general utilities were looking good.

Overall, the X1 is a pleasure to behold -- it's one sexy device. That said, we'll have to wait how Sony Ericsson's user interface shapes up and just look at the pretty pictures in the gallery until mid-September.

iPhone anti-interference shield puts an end to buzzing speakers

Etichete:

As anyone with an iPhone and some unshielded speakers is likely well aware, the two don't exactly get along all that well together when they're in close proximity, with the fight for your desk's air space often resulting in an annoying buzzing sound. Now, one enterprising individual has thankfully come up with a solution in the form of the iPhone anti-interference shield, which consists of nothing more than a carefully cut Red Bull can and some always-handy double stick tape. The shield's creator does warn that there could possibly be some hindrance to your reception, however, although that apparently hasn't been noticeable so far. Of course, then shield would no doubt be just as effective with another 2G GSM phone, and you can probably find a suitable substitute for the Red Bull can if its not to your taste either.

Nokia rolls out N78 firmware update

Etichete:

Nokia pushing out a user-installable firmware update to one of its S60 handsets is certainly nothing new and unfortunately, pushing out said update to the European model before the North American model is nothing new, either, but what is new is how this particular update is being distributed. The company is finally taking advantage of S60's over-the-air update capability, allowing users to nab the 2MB binary for the European variant of the N78 right over a WiFi or 3G connection (GPRS / EDGE too, we imagine, but that'd be pretty painful). Version 11.043 is said to imbue handsets with "improved stability with Bluetooth (headsets and car kits) and music (playback over a long time and content refresh)" alongside "optimized Camera performance and Naviscroll sensitivity improvements," so we'd say it's pretty much a no-brainer to grab particularly since it doesn't mean sitting down in front of the PC with a USB cable and an iron will.

Asus P750 Review

Etichete:

Asus P750 lands on the crowded Windows Mobile Pro scene but it sure isn't dropped defenseless. The Asus PocketPC is among the best equipped Windows Mobile devices on the market. A hardware multi-tap keyboard to back up that 2.6" TFT touchscreen, HSDPA, fast 520 MHz Marvel CPU, Wi-Fi, built-in SiRF Star III GPS, stereo Bluetooth and a 3 megapixel autofocus camera certainly sound like the right ammo to take on HTC-branded devices.

Still, many might have second thoughts about buying a handset by a maker with not so long a history in Windows Mobile. To them we say we found the Asus P750 enjoyable at first glance and the first impressions are of a handset that can top almost anything HTC throws at it. In case we've got you interested enough, join us to find out if the potent PocketPC carries its feature load with style.

ASUS P750 doesn't seem to have a straight replica in the HTC lineup - the same holds true for the Eten PocketPCs too. That hardware multi-tap keypad really sets it apart - usually in the PocketPC world it's either no keyboard at all or a full QWERTY.

Unfortunately, the Asus P750 doesn't have a good enough advantage over QWERTY devices sizewise. It's on the large side while the display is below the 2.8-inch standard that seems to reign the industry. Still, it's not a big difference, and the tad smaller screen wasn't that much of a bother to us.

Asus have only recently announced their thumb-optimized Home screen plug-in, so essentially you can't rely on getting a full thumb-operated device straight out of the box. You have to rely on the stylus in most of the occasions. That's not necessarily a big thing, but we find this to be the major weakness of most current PocketPCs. And yes, we admit that it was the Apple iPhone that served as an eye-opener in this repect.

We are guessing though that Windows Mobile still has a lot of fans and it's a versatile platform with enough potential - a look at the HTC Touch Diamond clearly proves that. So, if you are still interested, we'd love to host a guided tour of the do-s and don't-s of the Asus P750.

LG KT610 Hardware Review

Etichete:

I’ve already taken a look at how well the LG KT610 handles music, but now I want to focus on the hardware. The early hands-on reports from the Mobile World Congress 2008, where the phone was announced, were of poor build quality and cheap materials. However, those were with a pre-production unit, so it’s important to see what’s been addressed in the full production unit that I have on my desk.

I’ve spent 5 years in the U.S. retail mobile phone market, and I remember such LG atrocities as the C1300 and C2000. I wouldn’t have paid my grandma to take those phones, and generally have low expectations from LG. However, over the past few years there has been a noticable increase in the build quality of their handsets, specifically with the Shine, which I was able to review here. The LG Env2 for Verizon, which is the CDMA/non-S60 version of the KT610, has earned user ratings of 4.36 out of 5 on Phonescoop.com, attesting to the overall quality.

The phone is clad entirely in black plastic, with a metallic bezel around the front of the phone. The outer keypad consists of 6 rows of flush keys, including the extra non-numeric ones. These keys are very large, with easy-to-read labels, and offer a great tactile response. With the phone closed, there is no wobble in any direction, despite the two halves being connected only by 2 hinges.

When you open the phone up, longways, you’re greeted by 4 rows of QWERTY keys, including the top number row. There is a dedicated end/send key above the d-pad, which is positioned on the right. Below that is the dedicated S60 menu key and a camera shortcut button. The left and right softkeys are positioned above the keyboard, directly below the onscreen labels they correspond to.

After using the E90, I much prefer the softkeys to be positioned below the screen, as opposed to their location on the E90, to the side of the display. Each of these rows on the keyboard are raised slightly in the middle, and there is ~1mm of space between each key on this keyboard. As a result, it is extremely easy to type on the LG KT610 with your thumbs, though the layout is much too small for finger-typing as you would on a normal keyboard. The internal keys do seem to touch the internal display, when the phone is closed, but only slightly, and there have not been any scratches.

The internal display is flush with the area around it, though since it’s inside, you shouldn’t get face gunk on it in the first place. When handling the phone, and typing out long messages, the phone itself does not creak or moan at all. There is also zero wiggle in the hinges, open or closed. The back of the handset is slightly rubberized and textured with a fake leather pattern, for added grip.

LG has really outdone themselves in the build quality of the KT610. From my usage, I believe that handset would easily be able to withstand the usual wear and tear without falling apart. The hinges are rock solid and do not wobble either in the open or closed position. The smaller external display is less exposed to being cracked, and the internal display is nicely protected. Both keyboards are a complete joy to type on.

In the area of hardware, I have to give the LG KT610 a full 5 out of 5 points. I can’t come up with a single complaint, in terms of build or fit and finish.

Nokia buys Symbian, turns software over to Symbian Foundation

Etichete:

Nokia's been in bed with Symbian for many, many years through the development of its S60 platform - the world's most populous smartphone platform, dont'cha know - and they're taking that relationship to its endgame today by announcing that they'll be acquiring the remaining shares of Symbian that they don't already own. Here's where it gets interesting, though: rather than taking Symbian's intellectual private for Nokia's own benefit, the goods will be turned over to the Symbian Foundation, a nonprofit whose sole goal will be the advancement of the Symbian platform in its many flavors. Motorola and Sony Ericsson have signed up to contribute UIQ assets, while NTT DoCoMo (which uses Symbian-based wares in a number of its phones) will be donating code as well.

Other Symbian Foundation members include Texas Instruments, Vodafone, Samsung, LG, and AT&T (yep, the same AT&T that currently sells precisely one Symbian-based phone), so things could get interesting. The move clearly seems to be a preemptive strike against Google's Open Handset Alliance, LiMo, and other collaborative efforts forming around the globe with the goal of standardizing smartphone operating systems; the writing was on the wall, and Symbian didn't want to miss the train. Total cash outlay for the move will run Nokia roughly €264 million - about $410 million in yankee currency.

Nokia to acquire Plazes

Etichete:

Nokia has announced it has reached an agreement to acquire Plazes, a context-aware social-activity mobile phone service.

"This acquisition helps Nokia to accelerate its vision of bringing people and places closer together, in line with our broader services strategy", said Niklas Savander, head of Nokia services and software.

"In addition to the key assets, through this acquisition Nokia will bring on a visionary team with an advanced understanding of social-activity services, as well as the technical ability to further develop this area."

Nokia says Plazes adds the elements of "place" and "time" to social networking through features that allow people to alert friends of their activity and location; review their own and others' past activities; share their experiences and make plans with friends, who are then able to respond with comments and suggestions as well as their own location information.

Plazes is a privately-owned start-up company of 13 people based in Berlin. The agreement is subject to the usual conditions and is expected to close in the third quarter 2008 after which Plazes will become part of Nokia's Services & Software unit.

Nokia E66

Nokia E71

Focusing on the E71's multimedia performance

Etichete:

The E71 may be first and foremost a business messaging tool, but the Nokia E71 also manages to packs in a lot of multimedia functionality too. In this addendum to our original review Steve has a detailed look at the multimedia capabilities of the Nokia E71. There are camera performance comparisons and a focus on video capabilities.

Now, I know at this point the Eseries marketing people are going to leap up from their chairs and say 'But you can't do a feature on Eseries multimedia - that's not what we built the device around!' However, talking to the same marketing people at the E71 launch revealed that a significant number Eseries devices sold so far have, as far as they can tell, been to private customers rather than businesses. Doubtless these customers had their professional needs in mind, but the fact remains that there are still a lot of people who want an Eseries phone for its own merits and not just because some IT manager bought a job lot to integrate with his precious email server.

Google’s Android On A N95

Etichete:

Some guy named Jovan has managed to get Android up and running on a Nokia N95. Yes, the same Nokia N95 that runs the S60 operating system. He claims to now have a dual boot between Andriod and S60. He backs up this claim by the video above and another one below, with which he demoes Google Maps and the Dialer. After playing with this setup he says, “My impressions after using it are all positive, its much faster than Symbian, looks better, thought some functions still dont work, and the 3D engine is slow and lags”.
Do keep in mind all of this might be fake.

HTC Advantage X7510 available to USers for $1,300

It doesn't sound like Qualcomm has all of its legal woes here in America worked out just yet, but apparently that won't stop fat-walleted USers from snapping up the forthcoming HTC Advantage X7510 real soon. Both Dynamism and On The Go Solutions are expecting stock any day now, and they'll be shipping to your US-based address so long as you're willing to accept a $1,299 charge on your preferred piece of plastic. Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 Hands-On Pictures

Etichete:

The lucky chaps over at Boy Genius Report have managed to get their hands all over Sony Ericsson's latest and greatest -- the hotly anticipated Xperia X1. Early word is that the 800 x 480 screen, optical joystick, and speedy HSDPA data are all very welcome, but the keyboard (which looks like it would be a joy to type on) leaves a lot to be desired. Of course, the OS should come as no surprise, and they don't seem to have any shots of Sony's "panel interface," so for now you'll have to make do with some nice looks at the exteriors of the device. Video hands-on with the new E66 and E71 from Nokia

Etichete:

We got a quick little bit of quality time with Nokia's new business-centric S60 phones, the E66 and the E71. Both phones are virtually identical when it comes to specs, so it really boils down to what you prefer in form factor. If you're a T9 maven and prefer a vertical screen orientation, the E66 slider is obviously your ticket, but the E71's full QWERTY keyboard and glorious 10mm of thickness are probably going to guide it into many a business slack front pocket. The E71's keys have a harder, clickier feel to them than its predecessors, and they're also a tad more crowded than usual -- we had a bit of trouble typing at first, but it's a solid, well-built keyboard that'll certainly come to be second nature with a bit of use.

Despite the phone's thinness we found it to be incredibly sturdy and just the right weight. As for the E66, we just love the feel of its slider mechanism, but we're a little puzzled as to the thickness compared to the E71. That said, it's a quite comfortable and small form factor for a smartphone. Our favorite new feature on these phones is the quick switch from business to personal use, which can swap your home screen, email accounts and calendar to your personal stuff after hours -- and with that hefty 3.2 megapixel camera, A-GPS and WiFi, there's plenty of fun to be had with these phones when your work is through. Video after the break.

After months on leaks, live images, official demoes, and even a review(!) the Nokia E66 and the E71 will finally be officially announced today, the 16th of June, at a business event in London. To my knowledge Rafe and Steve from AAS will be there and so will be Ben Smith from SMS Text News. So keep an eye on these sites for the latest. I can’t wait, just a few hours to go. I want the E71 - badly!

Firefox mobile coming later this year

Etichete:

Mobile version of the famous Firefox desktop browser, Firefox Mobile (aka Fennec), is likely to be available to mobile users in Q4 this year. However, it will be available only on Windows Mobile, Symbian and Linux platforms and probably will never be ported onto iPhone or Android. According to Mozilla Europe President Tristan Nitot, the main reasons behind this are that the Android will run only Java programs and that Apple legally does not allow programs with interpreted languages to be run on iPhone. However, Fennec is already available for Nokia Internet Tablets.

Samsung Omnia i900 Video

Etichete:

Samsung has launched a new touchscreen device that promises to be "everything to everyone" on the same day Apple are rumoured to be launching a 3G iPhone and we've managed to get a quick video review of it.

The new handset called the i900 or Omnia to give it its "funky" name promises to offer business users full touchscreen functionality with a business rather than consumer focus.

In the rumour mill pipeline for some time, Samsung has finally made it official, giving the i900 a proper UK launch on Monday.

The new handset will sport a 3.2-inch screen, come with HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 5-megapixel camera, accelerometer and come with two memory options 8 or 16GB. It will also feature the usual array of extras including radio and Bluetooth, and as standard with Samsung touchscreen devices offer Haptic support when you touch the screen.

Toshiba's Portege G810 set for release June 20th

Etichete:

We've heard a great deal about the Toshiba's glossy Windows Mobile Speed Racer and now we're finally getting a date. Akihabara's reporting that the Portege G810 should be hitting shelves on June 20th for some as-of-yet undisclosed price -- though we'd throw our money at it being in the higher end for Windows Mobile devices. A quick review of the spec sheet shows us Windows Mobile 6.1, HSDPA and HSUPA, 2.8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, WiFi, FM radio, GPS, and 4GB of storage via microSD. So there you have it, hop back over shortly before launch day and hopefully we'll have a dollar value to throw your way.
