Linux-based Samsung i800 gets canned
Back in February, we all had high hopes that the Linux-based Samsung i800 would be a real winner when it launched on Orange this fall. Unfortunately, the i900 is apt to be out and about before the i800 can even have a proper funeral. According to Edelman, Orange's PR firm, the "i800 has been withdrawn in order to... prepare a more competitive Linux mobile." In all honesty, we don't suspect that many folks will miss it, but those holding out on picking up a new cellie can safely move on to courting other handsets.

Skyfire beta for Symbian
Although Skyfire continues to promise great things in the front Windows Mobile - a striker that needs as many high quality as browsers that can get - there is another beta version of the company getting underway for a version of its S60 Flash-enabled Web viewer. Like Opera Mini and Deepfish, Skyfire makes the content server side - and besides Flash, is supported by packing for Quicktime, Windows Media, Silverlight, and AJAX, so it must serve a PC very similar to experience. Unfortunately, this is an experience that only a few in the private sector can enjoy beta at the moment, but now Skyfire taking subscriptions for Beta 2.

Mac and Windows on N810
The number of OSes that can be run on N810 Internet Tablets just grows and grows. Now it's time for MS Windows family. I hope you still remeber Windows 3.1. The trick to run it on NIT is to use DOSBOX utility - x86 PC emulator (the instructions may be found e.g. here or on Internet Tablet Talk forums). What's more interesting, there's a proof that you may also run Windows 95 this way, but don't expect that it will start and work smoothly (you really need to be patient). Thanks to very active Internet Tablet community, you can also have MAC on MIT by using the Basilisk II Macintosh emulator (list of Macintosh Software that can be run on a NIT and instructions).
Purists would extend the list of working OSes by adding Android, Ubuntu and numerous emulators (all ported to maemo) like Amiga 68k - UAE, Apple II - Winapple, Commodore 64 - Frodo, Palm OS - Access GarnetVM, TI-89 Calculator - TiEmu 2 (just to mention the most interesting ones). Can you do this all on iPhone?

Samsung Omnia final form preview
Arne over at the unwired has his hands all up on the production version of Samsung's touchtastic Omnia i900, and yeah, it's pretty much official: the Touch Diamond has a solid competitor on its hands. The skinning Sammy's managed to perform here atop Windows Mobile's ancient UI might not be quite on part with the magic that is TouchFLO 3D, but it looks pretty close -- it's still better by leaps and bounds by the default, the transitions are kinda cool, and you're certainly going to want to use it if you're using this phone. Like the GSM version of the Touch Diamond, the Omnia sadly lacks any whiff of North American 3G (for the moment, anyhow), so this video is the closest many otherwise-interested yanks and canucks are going to get.

Symbian and Android to make love, not war
The launch of Android, Google's open-source OS for mobile phones, was postponed . As a consequence, a majority of carriers and handset vendors have pushed the launch of their Android-powered smart phones to the end of the year or beginning of next year. In the meantime, Nokia acquired Symbian and then released this dominant mobile OS in open source. Many believed that this was a prelude to a head-on collision with Android but it looks like the two are headed for more of a beast with two backs relationship than a tap out.
"We expect that within the next 3-6 months, Symbian and Android will combine to provide a single open-source operating system," said Jack E. Gold, founder and principal analyst at J. Gold Associates, who has been tracking computer, electronics and mobile phone spaces over 35 years. "Many of the same sponsors are involved in both initiatives."
"The question is, how many open source mobile platforms do we need? The mobile market does not need more divergence. It needs convergence, and this would be a way to accomplish this," said Gold. "The mobile market needs some level of consolidation of platforms if it is to make big leaps forward, as developers currently struggle to make their applications available on so many divergent platforms." Other key players in the mobile OS arena are Windows Mobile, Palm and Apple.

Nokia N85 Confirmed
Remember the rumoured Nokia N85 that was leaked not so long ago!? Well earlier today a User Agent Profile posted by Nokia confirmed the devices existence and revealed its true specifications!
First impressions, i’m a little disappointed. Nothing about it so far brings anything new to the portfolio and seems to be a midrange N96.
The release of this information suggests that the device should be announced relatively soon!!!
Read on for more details and a link to the profile!!!
The N85 carries on with the design language introduced by the N81 and followed with the N78 and N96 and still makes use of a QVGA 240 x 320 pixel screen. What I found surprising is that Nokia have decided to use a 3.2 megapixel camera. From the pictures that were leaked the N85 will have a dual LED flash (much like the N96) and a camera shutter to protect the lens.
The device will run on Symbian S60 Feature Pack 2 and features the usual connectivity options - GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, Wifi and HSDPA, but no signs of GPS this time…
Overall, as I mentioned in the introduction to this post, the device seems to be a midrange N96 aimed at the mass market. Even though no there is nothing new included in the specs of the N85, it will be interesting to see how well the device performs.
Heres a link to the profile so you can view the full specification list for yourself!
http://nds1.nds.nokia.com/uaprof/NN85-1r100.xml
Could the N85 be what the N81 should have been, have the N-Gage application preloaded and be the gaming device to launch the N-Gage service publically to the masses???
The dual slide form factor could easily cater for dedicated gaming keys as well (just like the N96).

10 ways to improve your iPhone's battery life
Top 10 iPhone battery life tips 1. Store and use the iPhone at room temperature Direct sunshine or putting the iPhone in the glove compartment of a warm car will cause your iPhone's battery life to drop sharply. The iPhone functions well between 0 degrees centigrade and 35 degrees centigrade (32-95° F). You should store your iPhone in conditions between -20° C and 45° C (-4° F to 113° F). The ideal battery life environment for both usage and storage is room temperature: 22° C (72° F). 2. Change Mail autochecking from every 15 minutes to every hour 3. Turn off Wi-fi If you don't need to use Wi-Fi constantly then you will get better battery life by turning it off and then enabling it when you want to browse via a hot spot. 4. Turn off Bluetooth 5. Reduce the display's brightness 6. Enable the display's Auto-Brightness Alternatively you could enable Auto-Brightness so the iPhone's display is automatically adjusted to match the current lighting conditions: 7. Lock the iPhone It may sound obvious but locking the iPhone as soon as you've finished using it will turn off the display immediately and ensure that it won't be making persistent calls while it's in your pocket. Simply click on the Sleep/Wake button on the upper right hand of the iPhone. 8. Enable Auto-Lock Better still, if you can get into the habit of locking your iPhone yourself simply turn on the Auto-Lock feature: 9. Turn off keyboard clicks If you regularly use the iPhone's touch keyboard then the constant need to generate audio keyboard clicks can add to the iPhone's power consumption. To turn off keyboard clicks: 10. Turn off the music equalizer (EQ) The iPhone's audio equalizer may add some oomph to the songs but it also delivers a powerful blow to the handset's battery life because of the constant processing it requires. To turn off the EQ:

Nokia 5800 Tube plays big role in The Dark Knight
So apparently a healthy exchange of cash and a captive audience glued to one of the biggest flicks of the year are all it takes to land early dibs on Nokia's elusive Tube. The Tube - which will likely be branded either XpressMusic or XpressMedia and carry model number 5800 - represents Nokia's first serious foray into the wide world of touchscreen smartphones (don't even try to pull the Series 90 card, people), so there's quite a bit of buzz building around it. Just like there's lots of buzz aroudn this new Batman joint. Coincidence? We think not!

Samsung launch I900 Omnia in Italy next week
If you've had your eye on Samsung's forthcoming Omnia, you've known good and well it was coming to Europe sometime this month. Thankfully, Sammy has removed the mystery by announcing that Italy will get first dibs when it launches in said country on July 22nd. We aren't told who will be second, third or last, but most major European locales should have it before September dawns. Obviously, prices will vary depending on operator and contract terms, but the 8GB edition (along with an Xbox 360 Arcade, as part of some random promotion) will reportedly be €499 ($789) without subsidy. Glean from that what you will.

Jokiusoft releases JoikuSpot Premium
The original (and free) JoikuSpot has risen through the ranks to become one of the more popular S60 apps around, and for good reason -- it turns your WiFi-equipped S60 device into a go-anywhere hotspot -- and when you add 3G into the mix, the result is truly magic. The Premium version of the same app is now available, adding VPN support for the corporate types out there and removing the forced Joiku-branded landing page that would-be users of your makeshift hotspot see the first time they connect. If you need the extra horsepower over the free version (which is still available), you can grab it now for €15 (about $24).

Native Push Email For Everyone
These days almost everyone, even non corporates feel the need for ‘push email’ - email sent straight into their inboxes and Nokia seems to be aware of this. Pursuant to this Nokia has launched a new beta service called Nokia Email which is the mail for exchange equivalent for those out of the corporate world. So basically if you have a IMAP or POP email provider such as GMAIL, you can have push email for free.
The service is still in beta and for now the list of compatible devices includes Nokia E51, E61, E61i, E65, E66, E71, E90, N73, N80, N81 8GB and the N95, looks like FP2 devices are out of the loop so far. All you need to do in order to get this setup is sign up on the Nokia Email website and get the download link sent to your mobile phone. Once you do that, installation and setup on the phone is a piece of cake. There are options to set the sync interval, whether you want it active while roaming and so on. The UI of the application is nice and feels FP2.
